I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target…

Clockwise from top: Stone Bib Necklace; Pyramid Studded Cuff (clearance section); Stretch Rhinestone, Silver Chain, and Oxidized Studded Rings Set of 3; Faux Python Cuff Bracelet with Gold Chain and Embellishments (clearance section)

Like really stay away.  Like we’re talking a blockade and police barricade.

Just a few things I picked up the other day at my local Tar-JAY.

The designer for their jewelry must be new (since I can’t find anything online confirming this, I’m just assuming…) because this stuff rocks.  It’s the only way how I can explain how their jewelry (not the designer-collab stuff, just the regular costume jewelry sold at Target) sometime during the last year went from um, “nice” to “omigawd I want every piece right. NOW!!”

I love these edgy cuffs stacked together.  Or apart!

And these rings, which can also be worn separately.  Not too crazy about the rhinestone one, which looks kinda cheap IMHO, but I was thrilled to find the studded one since I’ve been on the hunt ever since Forever 21 stopped making their version.  I also love the chain ring.

The nail polish is, too, from Target – O.P.I’s “Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow.”  A dark jade green that is black in some lights and evergreen in others.  It looks so sinister, even more so than I think black does.  But I digress.

Ahh, the piece de resistance.  This Stone Bib Necklace just looks so opulent and it elevates any outfit to a major ensemble in a flash.

Plus Target just got Temple St. Clair jewelry in, and I’m loving the ladies-who-lunch feel to their bauble drop earrings and jumbled charm bracelets.  Who’s with me on this one??! 😉

Might just have to make a trip back, if I can get around the self-imposed barricade…

The Origins of the Sideways Cross Ring: Formspring.me Question

wxtratv.warnerbrofrom formspring.me:

Who came up with the sideways cross ring first? you or madonna/material girl

(does the ring above look familiar?  Forever 21, anyone?)
Hmm. The photo above of Madonna is the first time I’ve seen it, to be honest.  (And it looks awfully familiar to me – I instantly thought it was the Forever 21 ring that they had used to style to shoot.)

I highly doubt the inventor was anybody recent. The sideways cross has a rich symbolic history that dates back to the Bible if not earlier; one of the first re-usages of it was in 1821 when it was adopted on the Norwegian flag; and later, in 1883, when The Emblem of the Order was created utilizing a Maltese cross on its side. (source: Wikipedia.org)

By now, there are pretty much no new ideas in fashion; everything is just recycled, reappropriated, updated, and reused. Neither myself, nor Madonna, nor Forever 21 invented the sideways cross ring – my guess is that it probably was seen in the 20th Century sometime in the 60’s or 70’s (maybe in a Black Sabbath poster LOL), and Forever 21 was one of the more recent recylers of this idea.

The 3 Earrings You Can Style Aaannnything With

On formspring.me a reader asked what my 3 favorite earrings are.  Well here they are!  (Sorry I deleted the question by mistake when I went to post it to Blogger.:-(

These are usually the three that I reach for regardless of what outfit I’m wearing.

The oversized rhinestone earrings (from Forever21; no longer sold but a very similar pair here) I wear when I want to go crazy over-the-top glam…and they look surprisingly fun paired with an old t-shirt and jeans.  Plus, for a really formal event (not like I have many to go to!) they’re perfect with an LBD for some retro glam.

The large hoops are light as a feather and I love the tiny star detail at the back.  They’re for when I want to be a little more dressed up but more classic.  (bought in Japan)

The small gold hoops are a recent purchase in Tokyo (LaForet Harjuku though I also found them in another store along Takeshita street there) – I really love secure-post small hoops in gold since I don’t have to take them out in the shower and can sleep with them in, and they still look chic and dressed-up with a number of different outfits.  I love the subtle studding on the surface.  Alas, I found that they have too much nickel in them for my sensitive ears – and the post is a bit too thick, so I’m still debating what to do.  After wearing them for 3 days straight I got a massive infection in my right ear that took more than a week to clear up. *sigh*  Sorry, maybe that’s a bit TMI!

I also tend not to wear earrings that much, since while my hair is short I wear it covering my ears a lot, and it seems kind of pointless to put in earrings when they can’t be seen anyway…

What earrings do you gravitate to?  Hoops, studs, sparklies?
Thanks for your question!

LuShae Jewelry: Affordable, Pretty, and oh-so-Sparkly!

When it comes to online shopping for budget-friendly sparkly jewelry (wedding bands, engagement bands, promise rings. etc.) there’s a lot out there – and it’s expensive!  When I heard about LuShae Jewelry I was not only impressed with the prices on their website, but I was also intrigued as to whether the actual pieces were as quality as the descriptions.

I was first shocked at how quickly the package arrived (from Australia, no less!); I ordered it on a Thursday evening, and received it Monday in the mail.  (And this was choosing the “regular shipping” option at checkout!  I’m also on the U.S. West Coast, for reference purposes.;-)

Secondly, what was in the shipping box was a beautiful canvas-covered navy-and-cream buttoned jewelry box – a jewelry box design I’ve never come across before (and I have jewelry-makers’ supply catalogs from just about everywhere).  It wasn’t too frou-frou (it could work as a gift box for a woman or a man), but it wasn’t cheapy either.

Thirdly, I was impressed with the quality of the ring within.  Sure, the photo looked nice on the website but you never really know.   The silver was beautiful and bright, and the stones were clear and pure in their colors.  Here is the ring I chose from their site:

Isn’t it incredible?  (CZ Sculpture ring, $69)

Now, the offerings on the site are probably more geaered to the classicist – they offer some very classic, tasteful designs that are likely to withstand the test of time.  [On another note, I was also interested in the wedding band replacements they offered since mine and Hub’s wedding bands, which are Cartier and made of platinum, are scratched unbelievably.  Open a door?  It gets scratched.  Pick up my chain-handled bag?  Scratched?  Do the dishes?  Scratched.  I had no idea platinum was so soft – it’s like buttah.  And my Tiffany’s sterling silver engagement ring has also suffered the same fate.  I have had them proessionally polished multiple tmes – and they just end up a mess of scratches almost immediately after.  Thus I rarely wear my wedding/engagement rings, and since our 10th anniversary since we met is coming up, we were thinking of replacing them with something that won’t scratch and look so messy.  So if you are in the same situation, and don’t want to wear your real wedding band every day (perhaps it’s extremely precious; could get lost or damaged etc.) then LuShae has some great options in stainless steel, like this 2mm Gold Band.

Even though I had a hard time choosing from the jewelry on their website since so much of it is classic (and I’m not really a classic gal, to tell the truth), I was taken with this Rhodium-finish ring, with its bars of jonquil, light amethyst, and peridot CZ.  I have honestly never seen a design like this, with alternating gemstone bars at different angles.  It’s lovely, bright, springy, and oh so unusual.

If you are in the market for sparkly, affordable jewelry (that’s far more quality than what you can find at the mall) – definitely check out LuShae Jewelry and browse through their rings, earrings, and necklaces to see if anything captures your fancy.:-)

No, No, No, NO! Zipper Pull Jewelry is EVERYWHERE!

Is it bad when DIY-oriented, non-mainstream jewelry is sold by such a large e-tailer as Uncommon Goods??

[They also sell a Recycled Bicycle Chain Bracelet ($14), a bangle formed from an oversized nail ($145), and a Zipper Pull Necklace ($90). All these items are apparently made by a couple of artists selling their wares – they’re handcrafted from recycled materials, etc. etc.]
Does anyone think the price is a little….um, steep???

Now don’t get me wrong…I love Uncommon Goods for funky, cool gifts. But stuff we’ve seen all over the blogosphere, and on cool it-girls like Kate Lamphear (below, photo from karen-wheredidugetthat.blogspot.com)…now being sold by such a large company online? Perhaps the trend is now officially dead.

I feel bad for the designer who made this and gave it to her in hopes of some exposure. It’s okay, but the zippers look kinda cheap and bunged-up, and the cuff part that they’re sewn to looks like a simple piece of belted webbing. Maybe Uncommon Goods did it better…?

Ooh! Plus- head over to Michael’s. Look in the bead/pendant section (bypassing all the ugly gigantic lampwork pendants). There’s a line of pendants and findings called “Tokens”..and in this line is some cool, stylish stuff, like a cast 3″ bircage with a little bird in it, or an oversized kilt pin with rhinestones.

They sell an oversized (like 2″ long) cast zipper pull pendant. Gah! And I almost bought it, too!! What is the world coming to???:-)
