I’ve Received 2 Blog Awards!

Awww, thanks!  I’m sorry it’s taken me awhile to post them, but here they are:

from the amazing L ~DIY Diva~ at Avid Accents, the Versatile Blogger Award.

4 rules go along with this award:

Rule 1: Thank the person who gave you this award.
Done!  Thanks L ~DIY Diva~!
Rule 2: Share 7 things about yourself.
Aren’t you gals sick of hearing about me yet???! 🙂
 1) One of my hobbies is filling my garden with unusual plants (as long as they don’t require too much upkeep), since I’ve always been bored by plain old red roses or white daisies. Hub has let me get away with blue roses and a sorbet peony so far, but has nixed the Dead Horsehead Lilies and Voodoo Lilies (I suggested planting them along the property line with our particular odious neighbors), and Venus Flytraps won’t grow wild in Oregon (who knew??).  Hopefully my green Coneflowers will bloom soon and maybe this Fall I can sneak in an Arctic Kiwi and some black poppies.  (img of voodoo lilies from here)
 2) I’ve never broken a bone, ever.  Knock on wood! (img of cast from here)
 3) I’ve kept every birthday card I’ve ever received – going back until the age of 2.
4) I’m a complete klutz and was never really “good” at any sport.  I was passibly *okay* at volleyball, softball, and badminton, but that’s it!
5) I’ve always wished to be able to learn how to juggle, do an overhand serve in volleyball, ride a unicycle, and swim the crawl and backstroke properly.  My greatest dream is to be able to get en pointe (not necessarily dance in ballet, just do the exercises in pointe shoes), but at this point in my life that’s probably never going to happen.:-( (pointe shoes img from here)
 6) I have one brother who’s 2 years younger than me, who kind of looked like Brad Pitt when we were kids but now looks more like Niels BohrHe was more popular with the ladies when he looked like Brad Pitt. (photo of Bohr from here)
7) Whenever I fly, I actually read the safety information in the seat pocket in front of me, locate the nearest exits, memorize how many seats it is to the nearest exit, and watch the crew safety video.  One time a man sitting next to me saw me reading the safety card, and said “In my 35 years of traveling on planes you’re the first person I’ve ever seen actually read that.”  Hey, if the plane falls out of the sky, I at least want to know where the exit was.  Just sayin.’
Rule 3. Pass the award along to 15 bloggers who you have recently discovered and who you think are fantastic!
(in no particular order)
4. Contact the bloggers you’ve picked and let them know about the award.
Will do!  (though it may take me a little while…)

From the lovely Shabna of < a href=”http://shabsy.blogspot.com/”>SHABNA Speaks comes this award.  I love her editorial eye and the items she picks to showcase on her blog.

I have to nominate 10 people to pass this award on to!
So here it goes:

Whew!  Thank you so much for the awards!  I truly appreciate it:-)

DIY Alexander Wang Zipper Sunglasses Featured in Free Magazine

done_frontThese sunglasses (a dupe of the Alexander Wang for Linda Farrow zipper sunglasses) are a bit fiddly to make, but the results are totally impressive!  My tutorial was featured in Free Magazine, the official magazine of Club 18-30.

Those of us stateside may not be familiar with Club 18-30, but for our friends across the pond it’s sort of known as Europe’s version of Club Med (except catering to a younger clientele, hence the name).

My DIY Alexander Wang Sunglasses have been featured in the Summer 2010 issue, which is available in all Club 18-30 destinations from May – October.  (Available in 10 countries, including Bulgaria, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey, and Ibiza.)

Unfortunately they spelled my name wrong (there’s no U in it) – but ohwell!  A feature’s a feature!

Since I submitted this in February, in the meantime Style Hurricane also DIY’ed her own version using a real zipper around the edge of the sunglasses.

My version is a lot more labor-intensive, but I was going for as exact a copy as possible.:-)  Whichever way you go, now these fabulous designer-style sunnies can be yours at a fraction of the price!

Happy DIY’ing!

I’ve been Featured in Cut Out + Keep’s Online Magazine Snippets!

Snippets Magazine May 2010
Cut Out + Keep’s online magazine Snippets Issue #19

Wow!  I’ve been waiting with baited breath for this to post….I wrote all the content for my DIY tutorial section back in January, and due to some difficulties with the cover, the online issue took longer than the anticipated February drop.  (Do you see the sub-headline “CHIC STEALS: Make Your Own Catwalk Couture” on the left side of the cover??!)

Snippets Magazine May 2010

Yup, there I am – middle right!  And the features I contributed below:

Snippets Magazine May 2010

I’m so amazed to be in the same issue as the talented Tarina Tarantino, and I love how the editorial team laid out my section!

My tutorials featured in this issue (I’ll be re-posting to my site here a little later):

Styling Tips

Definitely browse on over to Cut Out + Keep and enjoy the full issue cuz I know the images above are hard to read…and if you’re not a member of COAK, please join!  It’s a heck of a lot better than Craftster’s interface, and has more tutorials, DIY’s, and inspiration than you can shake a stick at.

Thank you to all the folks (especially Cat!) at Cut Out + Keep, who made this possible!  I’m so thrilled to be a part of it!

I’m in Meg Magazine’s April 2010 Issue!

I’ve been featured in the April 2010 issue of the Philippines’ Meg Magazine, alongside fellow DIY blogger-extraordinaires Shini (Park & Cube), and Erica (P.S. I Made This).

Wow, my first hard copy magazine feature!

Thanks so much to Denise and the team at Meg for putting together the feature – I am so humbled and grateful!

I Received a Happy 101 Award!

Yes, this has taken me a month to post.  An entire month!!  Eeek.  I am getting behind and backed up as of late; so sorry to everyone.
This lovely award I received from the The Fashion Planner.  A frequent commenter here on Chic Steals, this gal runs a lovely and inspirational blog chock-full of great styling tips, what-to-wear solutions, and crafty how-tos (that DIY flower clip tutorial is calling my name!)  She’s also written an an interative style guide e-book called The Fashion Planner’s Guide, available for download on Lulu.com!

So, the requirements of the award are:

List 10 things that make you happy.
Try and do at least one of them today.
Tag 10 bloggers that brighten your day.
Link back to the person that tagged you.
Funny enough, alot of my “Make-me-happy” things are the same as The Fashion Planner’s!!  (Are they the same as yours?)

My Happy 10 (in no particular order):
1. Catching up with friends in email/phone/person
2. Getting nice things (not bills!! >:-( ) in the mail
3. Making low-cal, healthy sweet treats
4. Making clothes, jewelry, and accessories
5. Drawing
6. Playing with my son (and teaching him something new, hopefully:-)
7. Sweet comments on my blog
8. Watching a movie with a big ol’ bucket of movie theater popcorn
9. Going for a jog or walk
10. Appreciating nature
The ones I did today:
4) I worked on making a shirt.  And some polyclay cookies.

6) My son and I drew pictures together and I taught him to draw a worm, a T. Rex, and a helicopter.

7) Thank you, Kate Nicole and holasoylulu!

10) I planted some stuff in my garden.

Ah, the life of an unemployed, SAHM!

The tagged 10: (again, in no particular order)
Pretty Shiny Sparkly
the Dusk Zone
Dissolved Girl
Midnight Intern
Tweet
The Bargain Hunter Extraordinaire
Internal Sequin Issues
Evoleur
Style Scientist
Style Hurricane

Please check out their blogs if you have the time – they all bring a little happiness into my life!
Thank you, Fashion Planner, for this fabulous award!
