I’ve Been Featured in the Times!

No, not the New York Times.  My local newspaper, the Tigard/Tualatin/Sherwood Times!!

Yes, folks – the Tualatin Times ran a feature of me in their latest edition which came out Thursday, Sept. 16.   They included some nice quotes from me about my efforts to undermine established brand names and force everyone to pick up a pair of scissors and start crafting away.  Yay for subversion!!

They also came to my house and had me play dress up (not that they had to twist my arm or anything, LOL!) and filmed me while doing it.  They put together a little video of me blabbering and preening for the camera too.  😉

No, in all seriousness, I’m so flattered that they did a story on me!  The story was also run in the Beaverton Valley Times as well, so that’s about 26,000 subscribers who got a great big gander of yours truly in that crazy pillowcase skirt of mine when they opened their newspapers yesterday morning. /*o*

Thank you so much for the feature and the fabulous video, guys – I’m beyond words!! 😀 😀 😀

Video of Me Speaking Japanese

So a reader asked me on Formspring.me if I could make a video of me speaking Japanese.  So here it is!  (I made the video in like 30 minutes, so please excuse the low production values:-)

Just a little something to find amusing…;-)

Britney Spears’ Limited Edition Collection for Candie’s at Kohl’s

ads
Britney Spears has kept somewhat of a low profile since all her media snafu’s in the last couple years – but now she’s designed a line for Candie’s (yes, purportedly designed), available exclusively at Kohls.

Check out her video below introducing the collection:

And the runway show of the pieces themselves:

What do you guys think of this?

For me – A) I have serious doubts that she actually designed the collection, and B) the collection in no way stands out from anything I’ve already seen on hundreds of shelves in retailers from Macy’s to Target to catalogs like MetroStyle and online stores like Ami Club Wear.  It looks pretty indistinguishable from the multitude of low-priced teen fashion that is out there – and nothing about it seems “special” or says “Britney” in any way.  (Though what does nowadays?)  Add to the fact that Brit’s signature style (if she ever had one) and iconic status has all but disappeared over the last decade’s debacle of media outbursts, family scandal, indecent public exposures, questionble mental capacity, marriage woes, and legal trials – and the fact that she is no longer thought of as a “fashion icon” at all – and it makes me wonder why Candie’s thought this a sound move.  I’m also wondering what the price point for these pieces will be.  Will they be a steal, manufactured offshore in China and Bangladesh?  Hmmm.

In any case, Britney looks healthy and confident – which is truly a great thing.

If you’re really, really interested in all this – you can get behind-the-scenes videos, more photos, and an interview with the photographer for the campaign here.

The limited edition collection of day and evening looks, handbags and jewelry, titled “Britney for Candie’s,” will be available at Kohl’s and www.kohls.com starting July 1st, while products last.

Anyway – discuss!  I’d love to hear where you guys stand.

What is the Fashion Industry Coming To?

You guys have probably seen this already, but there is an in-depth series on “Dumbing Down American Design” on EcoSalon.

In a special four-part Dumbing Down American Design miniseries, EcoSalon takes a closer look at American design and considers different perspectives from leaders in the design and fashion world.
Has our quest for convenience forever altered fashion?
If we are to invest in sustainable design, doesn’t it start with the designer knowing something about fit? The pattern maker knowing something about quality pattern making? The retailer knowing something about which clothes to purchase based on construction versus fad? And ultimately, as consumers driving demand, what is our responsibility?

Over the next four weeks, we’ll provide insight into these questions.

Click below to read the series if you are interested in this topic:

Dumbing Down American Design, Part 1

Part 4 not yet posted…

And though this is not about American design per se and more about the manufacturing business in general (at least for wholesalers in the UK), there is a rather sensationalist series called “Blood, Sweat, and T-Shirts” that aired on British television awhile back. In this reality television series, six Brits visit Delhi and Hariana, working at a clothing workshop that sews pieces for undisclosed “high street brands,” and picking cotton in the fields for the textile mills.  It’s The Real World meets the real world…of fashion.  See what these priveleged, unskilled, ethnocentric, drama-queen twentysomethings deal with in another country, working on Indian terms to bring cheap fashion overseas to Western consumers: (Warning: NSFW language… and I’m sorry but I can’t find the series without the subtitles, and I can’t find any more than 5 eps…please let me know if you know where to find the rest of this series!)

So – thoughts?  Please share your reactions in the comments!

Project Peepway

Project Peepway video on YouTube.  Sweets + Fashion + Animation?  Fabulous!

(Can’t believe some of the vitriol of some of the comments.  Yeah, the video’s kinda silly, but someone sure spent a lot of time making it – RESPECT, people.)
