Inspired Alert! Find out Where, by Whom, and When…at INTO THE FASHION

Though I sometimes post a big-name brands piece that I feel was “inspired” somewhere else in my Inspired Alert! posts…this is an entire blog filled with that – straight from the runways.

I’m utterly inspired in turn…and in awe of how much time is put into all of this, as well as the blogger’s fantastic eye for similarities.  Author Diana Marian Murek is a German fashion designer who now lives in Milan and writes for Italian Grazia, and her comparisons of newer runway looks and advertisements with looks and ads from the past is mind-boggling.

I’m 3 Years Old…and I’m Moving!

 img found here

It’s my 3-year blogiversary!  I can’t believe Chic Steals is now 3 years old.  It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m hoping the best is still yet to come!  Thank you all for being on this journey with me – your readership and support has been invaluable as I’ve found my voice and discovered what it is I can contribute to that great wide (virtual) world.

So changes are now in the air!  After many years on Blogspot I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and move this blog over to WordPress.  I have no idea how long this will take me, though I’m going to try to get it done this week.  As a result, there may be times when you try to access my site and find it down, with broken links, or the RSS feed doesn’t show up.  Please bear with me…I will get it fixed eventually!

So thanks for an amazing 3 years…and here’s to 3…13…30…more!!

Using Publications’ Photos on Your Blog: Formspring.me Question

from formspring.me:
Carly – I can’t get thru the Conde Nast legal jargon and you seem quite knowledgable; How can we use pics from major publications? What are the limits? Can I use a pic from InStyle or Vogue to compare to a pic of one of my outfits? Answer please, oh blog
Hi there!
As far as I know, using photos from Style.com or wherever on your own personal blog is technically not completely ok. But what else are you to do? I (and many websites like mine, including those with much more traffic) simply provide a credit and a linkback for the photo (i.e., photo by Dmitris Kambouris, Style.com). Sometimes when I know the photo is probably a stock photo but I found it on another website who DIDN’T credit it, I’ll just write “img source” and link the word “source” to the website I found it. Considering it’s your own personal blog, you should probably also make a note at the bottom that “all images that are not mine are credited and if someone has a problem with me using them, then please contact me right away and I’ll remove them” sort of thing. If you run a publication of some sort (like an online magazine, for instance), then you have to secure rights to use the photo and pay ( usually a pretty hefty fee). Conde Nast doesn’t really seem to care if you’re crediting where appropriate and just displaying them on your personal blog, though they *may* contact you at some point. In almost 3 years of posting articles and images to the internet, I have never heard from them, but I am not lawyer and I am not fully aware of all the legalities involved. There is an interesting article (and accompanying discussion) relating to this issue on Independent Fashion Blogs here:
http://heartifb.com/2009/02/09/blog-photos/

It offers some great links to photos you CAN use without worry (i.e., Creative Commons-licensed).
Hope that helps and best of luck!

Publicity for Your Blog: Formspring.me Question

 img source
from formspring.me:
Hiya ! Sorry to disturb you ! I love your blog and i read it daily. You’ve inspired me so much that I have just made my own, but it’s still empty. How to get more publicity? Please visit my etsy shop here to see what i make : http://www.etsy.com/shop/Irani
Hi there! Thank you for the kind words about my blog. I’ve discussed how to start out and gain followers (i.e., publicity) here in an earlier post (https://chiccreativelife.com/2010/07/i-thinking-of-starting-fashiondiy-blog.html). As I mentioned in the post, reading back-issues of Style Sample Magazine is a fabulous way to learn the ins and outs of blogging, especially in regards to publicity. You could also join a networking group, like IFB (independent fashion bloggers), or a style-sharing site, like Weardrobe or Lookbook.nu. You could do post exchanges, by having a guest poster on your blog, or interview a blogger who already has a following. But to tell the truth “publicity” is really jumping the gun. You have to build up a certain style and voice to your blog, as well as building up a backlog of posts, in order to gain a following and repeat readers. Unless you have an extremely unique hook, an already-well-known name, or celebrity/powerful media contacts, then it’s almost impossible to gain publicity for something that has just begun straight off the bat. Publicity is something that you can work on or towards as you post your content, but focus on networking with other bloggers and gaining a following for now since you’ve just started. (You may also want to link your blog in your Etsy profile, if you’re using your blog to promote your items.)
Hope that helps!

How To Start a DIY/Fashion Blog: Formspring.me Question

from formspring.me:
I’m thinking of starting a fashion/diy blog.  What tips would you give to newbies about starting their blog, as well as how to get their blog publicity?

Congratulations!

First and foremost I would say you need to figure out what you want with your blog. Obviously if you just want to share photos of things that inspire you or post a few outfit photos because you just want to share with your close friends (and maybe some strangers), your approach will be different than if you want to be, say, the next StyleBubble.

Each type of blog has a pretty different approach to it, whether you focus on posting outfit photos, or designer interviews, or magazine scans, or party pix.

But one tried and true piece of advice is to post as often as you can, on a regular schedule. Like once every 3 days if you can manage it (even scheduling your posts in advance if you can write a couple posts all at once). You want people to keep coming back.

And commenting on other people’s blogs is key. (Lately I haven’t been following my advice because I’ve just been so busy, but once upon a time I was responding to every single comment, and commenting on other’s blogs as I surfed the web.) Don’t leave silly comments that could be made by anyone like “I like your dress!”, leave comments of worth, somehow tying things back to your blog, or asking the blogger to visit. Be nice! Word gets around on the web if you’re flaming people.

And clear photos are ESSENTIAL. There are many blogs that use few, if any, words to describe – and instead say it all with pictures. Use a digital camera and learn how to do the basics when it comes to cropping, resizing, and adjusting the brightness to your photos.

Style Sample Magazine [www.stylesamplemag.com] (the magazine for and about bloggers), is a wonderful resource, so I’d highly recommend you read through all the past issues. Probably everything you ever wanted to know about blogging is covered there!

Best of luck and keep us posted-

formspring.me question: what´s your opinion about this: http://www.leblogdebetty.com/2010/05/22/zara-we-have-a-problem/??

from my formspring.me inbox:
hi carly! what´s your opinion about this: http://www.leblogdebetty.com/2010/05/22/zara-we-have-a-problem/?? o this http://www.mediavida.com/foro/6/rocio-canero-vs-zara-324429 (sotty this one is in spanish)??
Ah yes. That’s ker-azy that Zara is using a blogger’s image without her permission. It’s legally actionable since she’s not a political figure, and her image is being appropriated in order to make money from it without her consent. Being “inspired by” and copying a photography exactly (even into a drawing) are 2 different things, especially when the copying is so exact that the original photo is instantly called to mind upon looking at the drawing. Zara knows better than using Kate Moss’ image without her consent on their t-shirts…the designer obviously felt okay using leblogdebetty’s image since she wasn’t as “big” a celebrity and therefore unlikely to retaliate – plus it was a photo out there on the internet, and the design team likely felt it was “fair game” (which it’s not!!).
