Review: Maruti Beads Straight from India, Gorgeous, Handmade Beads for the Jewelry-Lover in Your Life

marutibeads4 First of all: What are Maruti Beads? you may ask.marutibeads1Answer: They are amazingly-detailed, handmade beads in the rich tradition of Indian beadmaking. The clay beads are often adorned with metallic paillettes, braided wire, and tiny rings to bring a textured, glamorous finish to each bead. And each is made by hand!marutibeads3marutibeads2

A little more info about these three types of beads, straight from the MarutiBeads.com website:

Kashmiri beads are made from a mix of marble powder and manufactured resin (polymer clay) while the resin used in Lac beads is from a natural source. Also known as “Bollywood” beads, Kashmiri beads are hand decorated and use a variety of materials for embellishment such as mirror chips, seed beads, silver plating and rhinestones.

Maruti Beads artistically blends the beauty of Kashmiri beads with silver plated side caps to culminate in a one of a kind creation exclusive to Maruti International.

Lac beads are made from a mixture of Lac and marble powder, ornamented with silver plating, seed beads and rhinestones: detailed with metal elements, mirror chips and various embellishments…In short, Lac beads are highly valued individual works of art…Lac is a substance secreted by a tiny insect called Kerria lacca. The Lac insect is so small that a magnifying glass is needed to see it. This little bug dwells in the twigs of host trees and lives off the sap from which they secrete the hard Lac resin. When first harvested Lac resin is brittle and tough however, through a process of slow heating the resin softens into a workable material.

To be honest, I had never heard of Maruti beads before (nor Kashmiri, nor Lac beads), not until a rep from Maruti Beads International contacted me to see if I wanted to review their beads.

They sent me a multi-pack that included Maruti, Lac, and Kashmiri beads to review.

As you can see, each bead is beautifully unique. The attention to detail is just marvelous – and the rhinestones are top quality that really sparkle. Due to their ornate nature, the beads are a bit heavy but each exquisite one stands out. Thrown together into a piece of jewelry they may compete with one another – so probably the best use of them is to carefully choose where to place each one in designs for maximum impact.

marutibeads_braceletI made this pretty beaded bracelet in a flash, using imitation leather cording and a fish-hook closure. The beads would also be perfect as a single focal of a bracelet in an arm party stack (or many bracelets!!), or linked up together Shamballah-style. (You can also see Shamballah bracelets designed with Maruti beads here, and regular bracelets using Maruti beads here.) They can also be linked together into necklaces, or used in drop-style earrings. I love how each tiny bead tells a little story – and in some (not all) the hole is large enough to accommodate Pandora or Dione bead systems.

MarutiBeads.com also sells beautiful copper, glass, and gemstone beads, besides finished jewelry, on their website.

For any bead-lover or jewelry enthusiast I’d definitely recommend trying out these beads in your designs – and with the holiday season coming up they may make a wonderful present for the proverbial woman who has everything.

Sneak Peek: DIY in the Pipeline

I am soooo backlogged with DIY’s!  It’s so frustrating to walk into my office every day and see a pile of stuff that I’m just dying to finish up, but can’t spare even an extra minute to do right now.  Yes, I’m still working on the Balenciaga Cut-Out Boots.  Yes, I’m still working on the Gothic Lolita Bunny Bag.  My office is a complete mess, I can’t see my desk, and I can’t even get to my sewing table.  But I’m also dying to do a project involving the above…since they just arrived in the mail and are tempting me with their ethereal beauty.  I find jewelry projects so more satisfying since usually they can be finished fairly quickly, and enjoyed all the more rapidly.

What do you think these pretty tourmaline crystal points will end up as??  Something resembling a piece from some designer’s S/S 2012 collection? Hmmmm….

The answer soon to come!

DIY: Valentine’s Day Chocolate Erasers

Though I rarely cover non-wearable DIY’s on this blog, I’ve been struggling with what to showcase for V-day for awhile.  In the past I’ve found that making non-edibles for my guy has not gone over well.  In Hub’s case, he has always thanked me sincerely, and then proceeded to never wear or use whatever I have funneled hours into making.  The sweater I hand-knitted him sat in the closet for 9 years until he finally admitted he wasn’t really a “sweater-person” and I finally gave it to Goodwill.  The notebook I made, with the cover fashioned from one of his favorite shirts that he threw out, and then hand-bound…gathering dust in the bottom of his desk drawer.  Yet everything edible I’ve ever made him he’s devoured within 24 hours, and loved.  (Do you know any guys like that?  I think maybe it’s a guy-thing.)  So I was going back and forth between making something for my husband to wear (that he won’t) and showcasing it on this blog…since this is a wearables DIY blog…or making him something to eat and mentioning it.

So after many nights in thought I decided to forget the wearables idea (since I hate creating useless things more than anything)…and made Hub his favorite dessert: cheesecake, with chocolate swirls.

But…I made something else, too…for Lil Tot.  Erasers…in the shape of chocolates! I made them using a make-your-own-erasers kit bought in Japan (but it’s also available on Etsy here, shipped straight from Japan to you.)

photo from Etsy store ThisandThatfromJapan

Sometimes I enjoy fiddly, time-consuming crafts like clay crafting and deko-sweets, and because these kits come with plastic molds in them, making tiny chocolates, donuts, cakes, and ice cream is super-simple!  Then you dump the finished piece into the included box, add water, and zap in the microwave for about 3 minutes to let the binding agents evaporate.*  Allow to cool and you have a fully usable eraser!

This eraser clay is soooo fun, and already I’m thinking of new tiny edibles to create with the remaining colors.  And think of the trading potential at your little ones’ schools!  (I hear those food-shaped eraser packs are the new tradeables among the Elementary set lately…)

I made a swirl chocolate with a dollop of whipped cream, a heart-shaped chocolate, and a chocolate square with icing lines and an almond on top.

I also made a pink chocolate truffle, a chocolate square with a pink heart, and two chocolate pieces that look like they were snapped off of a chocolate bar.

They’re so adorable it seems like almost a shame to use them!

If you’d rather not order kits like this from Japan, Sculpey also manufactures Eraser Clay that cures by being baked in the oven – so you can create your own erasers in a variety of different shapes and colors.  However, if you want to create chocolates, you’d have to buy either the 8-bar Set or the Shape and Bake Kit since the 6-packs don’t contain brown.  (And you can’t make delicious-looking chocolate without brown!!;-)  I haven’t used this stuff before so can’t recommend it one way or the other…has anyone else played around with the Sculpey brand of eraser clay?

Tomorrow I’ll be taking the in-laws to the slopes of Mt. Hood…and Lil Tot will have his first-ever skiing adventure!  I’ll be stiff and sore from attempting to ski for the first time in…oh, 9 years or so…and looking extremely unfashionable as all my ski-wear is circa 1992 and I just haven’t seen the need to update it since.  (Likely photos from tomorrow I’ll be keeping under lock and key lest word get out I have a neon…multicolored….ski…poncho.  Yikes!!!)  And since I posted about the V-day erasers today, tomorrow I’ll also be sharing my DIY Links of the Week from the past week…and there’s some great ones, so stay tuned!

Hope everyone had a lovely day – whether you celebrated the holiday or not! * x */  (That’s a kiss – kinda;-)

*since U.S. microwaves tend to be 1000+ KiloWatts and Japanese microwaves are either 500KW or 600KW, I adjust the microwave times by subtracting about 10 – 30 seconds off the times recommended in the kits.

For all of you who DIY or habitually make clothing…or who love to keep your clothing looking as neat and fresh as the day you bought it…an iron is an absolute MUST.  And if you’re using said iron a lot, then eventually the quality of it becomes a deciding factor in how fast and how well you get your ironing done, your creases pressed, your seams steamed, your interfacings fused.  I myself bought a cheapy iron from a megamart store when I moved out to Portland – and you know what?  Given the sheer amount I use it, I heartily regret such a purchase.  It falls over, leaks, steams inefficiently, dirties up the water, tangles itself in the cord…I dread using that iron because whatever I’m doing it always adds another 15+ minutes of wrangling with it.  An iron like this would be a lifesaver – for both regular pressing and for DIY’ing your clothing!
