Alteration 101: How to Make a T-Shirt Dress Bigger

0.alteration101dress_introphotoHello all!

I apologize for my week-long absence…things have been just crazy with Lil Tot going back to school and getting back into the school routine. And I have an announcement to make soon – can’t wait to share!

alteration101dress_done4I snapped up a Stylestalker Space Jam T-shirt style dress from Shopbop in February – I just couldn’t pass up the cool pattern on it. (All it needs is a kitten shooting rainbows out of its eyes and then its the perfect Dark Side of the Moon-style CD album artwork. Or something like that.)       alteration101dress_materials Unfortunately it was the last dress left and at a size 4 it was a little too tight here and there on me (at the time in February). The mantra I live by:

So I went about to alter it to be a little more skimming, and here’s how you could do the same to a straight-shaped dress that just needs a little extra something:

DIY Memorial Day and Labor Day Dress Made from a Sheet – Finally, the Pattern!

Awhile ago I posted some photos of a dress I made for my Labor Day Party – which was nothing more than a sheet cut apart and sewn together artfully to make a finished dress.

I made it from a light chambray-colored sheet I found at my local Goodwill, cutting it apart in a way to utilize the finished hems.

It’s breezy, nautical, and chic – a perfect way to end the Summer…or commemorate the START of Summer on Memorial Day!

So what I made it for Labor Day…I think it works equally well as a breezy dress no matter what the day – so I’m wearing it for my Memorial Day barbecue too!

Download the DIY Labor Day Cascading Ruffles Bedsheet Dress Pattern (354 KB)

Whether it’s Labor Day, Memorial Day, or any other day, this pretty dress with cascading ruffles can be customized to any style depending on your sheet and your use of trims; mine is a chambray sheet with striped grosgrain ribbon trim and rope ties; you could also do a white sheet with lacy trim and satin ties for a completely different look!

Any questions on the pattern/instructions – let me know! I’m happy to help:-)

Happy DIY’ing!

DIY 1 and 2/3 yd. Easy Lace Summer Dress

Lace is a huge trend for this Spring and Summer – and its delicate, airy quality lends it to a variety of applications.  I’ve been wanting a lace dress for awhile, but I wanted to make one that was both easy and extremely versatile (I’m a BIG fan of multifunctional garments, as most of you already know;-).  I finally created this pattern for an incredibly easy lace dress – that only uses straight cuts in the pattern and allows you to customize it to your size and shape – and that can be worn a multitude of ways since it – *GASP!* – contains no lining.  Let’s get crackin’!

DIY: Men’s Shirt to Bow Tunic Dress

Once I saw this bow tunic dress in Vivi Magazine, it was all over.  I’m such a sucker for bows and anything really girly – especially when it’s multifunctional!  This sweet little piece you can wear with the bows running down your back or down your front depending on your mood.  Fashioned from an oversized man’s long-sleeved shirt, with a couple fixes it becomes a cute A-line batwing tunic dress – paired with pretty tights if you like your dresses super-short, or perfect over a miniskirt or leggings.
