When it comes to Fall Fashion I’m all about chic and work-appropriate, as I just started a brand-new full-time job where I have to look polished every day. Luckily, JCPenney is here to help, with the JCPLookbook.com which has a number of ideas for styling your fun (and affordable!) Fall outfits. jcpenney-fall-fashion-outfit-2-handbag-chic-steals

Normally I tend to dress a little more “dressed up” than necessary – because you never know when your next client is walking through the door, or when you’ll close a sale, or when you might need to go to a business dinner after work. And starting from a point of being dressed up makes it easy to transition to an evening-appropriate outfit by just switching out jewelry and darkening makeup. Dressing more conservatively makes me feel empowered because I never feel under-dressed for the situation. I feel ready to tackle head-on whatever life may throw at me. I recently teamed up with JCPenney to shop their latest in Fall fashion and put together some outfits that make me feel empowered.

Here are my new favorite Fall outfits found at JCPenney:

Nicole by Nicole Miller Sleeveless Print Panel Sheath Dress and Kelsie Tote, FIERCE rhinestone rose gold bangle (avail. in stores)

LOVE this printed sheath by Nicole by Nicole Miller (who’s celebrating it’s 10-year anniversary at JCPenney!) – it’s a statement outfit all in one and can be finished off with just a few accessories to complete it. I added in a rose gold bangle with “FIERCE” spelled out in rhinestones found at JCPenney’s Accessories department to remind me how I feel when I dress chic.

Worthington Black Diamond Stone Necklace, Curvy-fit Straight-Leg Pants (black)

Pants that fit well are hard to find, but these Worthington trousers truly skim over my curves and make my legs look long and slim. Paired with a rhinestone necklace and cool jacket, they’re perfect for a Monday meeting or a Friday dinner.

Worthington Black Diamond Stone Necklace, Zipper Envelope Skirt (black/white geo)

I’m a sucker for the monochromatic look, and this Worthington skirt is super eye-catching but conservative at the same time. Looks gorgeous with a pair of a pumps and a chic Nicole by Nicole Miller handbag!

YMI Wanna Better Butt Destructed Skinny Jeans (DIY’d with cut off legs), Nicole by Nicole Miller Kelsie Tote

Finally, for my days off, I need a pair of jeans I can live in but can dress up for a date. These YMI jeans are destroyed just the perfect amount (and really do make my backside look better!!). Find them in the JCPenney Junior’s Department.

So here’s my question for all of you: What makes you feel empowered? Leave your answer in the comments to be entered to win a $100 JCPenney gift card!

Layer Up for Fall in Hues of Mustard, Burgundy, and Navy with Modcloth

Mustard + Wine Modcloth Autumn Layering

The coming Winter chills mean layering is a must in colder climbs – and Modcloth has you covered when it comes to cute (and sophisticated!) layers. Inspired by the unrelenting recent Portland rains, I put together a Polyvore board featuring items from Modcloth that you can layer together to bundle up against the weather and still look fantastic.

Pairing mustard and burgundy looks high-end and polished for work, and pops of navy and blue make it fun. Add a bit of pattern for interest (polka dots) – pair with a lightweight Summer lace dress (for versatility and texture), and pop on a pair of mustard tights to tie the whole look together. Burgundy accessories complete the look – and, if it’s extremely frigid, you can add a soft cardigan underneath, and a jaunty beret and short wool gloves to keep even warmer.

This look works on a variety of body types and ages – just add an umbrella if you live in the Pacific Northwest. 😉

See Modcloth’s other great cardigan selections and outerwear to complete your Fall layering looks!

Stay warm this season!

5 Must-Have Items to Update Your Wardrobe for Fall 2013: Buy or DIY

5falltrends2013_buyordiy

{clockwise, from top left: Lanvin, Alice + Olivia, Zero + Maria Cornejo, Emporio Armani, Reed Krakoff}

Fall is almost upon us – can you believe it? Only a few more weeks until the end of Summer; the end of outdoor picnics, barbecues, lazy-day living, snow cones, afternoon naps, bumblebees, and the scent of freshly cut grass wafting through the air. I am currently undergoing a huge closet clean-out and am making space for new DIY’s and pieces that will truly round out what I have already and help with the transition. Here are a couple pieces I have my eye on:

{ 1 } MENSWEAR COAT

Aryn K Dillon Trench Coat, $130

Taking a cue from the boys, Alexander Wang, Jil Sander, and Lanvin showed boxy overcoats in double-breasted styles. I really love this piece from Aryn K, but you could also skimp on the purchase and find something menswear-inspired (or just plain from-the-mens’ section) at your local thrift store.

{ 2 } THE TURTLENECK

SONOMA Life & Style Warmwear Turtleneck, $20

Yes, it is back – in all its 80’s glory. Layer these under sweaters and overcoats, or opt for under a patterned piece for it to truly read current. This turtleneck from Kohls is super-versatile and won’t break the bank, and is a great doppelganger for styles shown by Alice + Olivia. You could also simply add on a strip of fabric to the neck of a favorite crew-neck top to create a one-of-a-kind conversion.

{ 3 } DARK GREEN

Screen Shot 2013-08-17 at 8.17.41 PMModcloth Duo Diligence Bag, $69.99

An unusual color, this dark shade can be treated as if a neutral black when you incorporate it into an outfit, without imparting an “I’ve just joined the armed forces” feel. Reed Krakoff’s take on this was a full-on green ensemble, but you could just opt for it in small doses. This Modcloth bag is utterly covetable, but you could also just take part in the trend with a package of Dark Green Rit Dye and a piece of clothing in a lighter color. The Dark Green should take on pretty much anything made of natural fibers, and camouflage a host of sins.

{ 4 } VELVET

Screen Shot 2013-08-17 at 8.39.30 PM

ASOS AERO Ankle Boots, $92.82

The luxurious textile is of course having another moment this year, and it’s easy to see why this is a winter staple. Emporio Armani’s Fall Collection embodied the luxury and warmth of this 70’s throwback fabric. Add some texture to your wardrobe in a fun color, like with these ASOS booties. If you’d rather DIY the look, do it the affordable way and try affixing the fabric to a pair of shoes with some Mod Podge.

{ 5 } COLORED LEATHER
Screen Shot 2013-08-17 at 8.30.18 PM

ASOS Wrap Kilt in Midnight Blue, $75.94

A little tougher to DIY, leather in dark blues, greens, purples, and burgundies dominated the runways, often paired with punky plaids or soft knits. Zero + Maria Cornejo’s leather trousers were to-die-for!  (This ASOS wrap skirt above perfectly embodies the trend – but at a much more accessible price point.) You can always try your hand at painting some leather in order to get the look (though keeping it to non-flexible leather accessories might be best if you’re using acrylic paints).
